Thanks to Federal EHR, VA Southern Oregon staff finding more time for Veterans
Clinicians at VA Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics are finding the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) delivers efficiency on many fronts. The result: more time for doctors, nurses and pharmacists to spend on caring for Veterans.
Four VA healthcare staff members in Southern Oregon spell out some of the time-saving benefits of the Federal EHR that are helping each of them focus on their patients.
Chief of Staff Dr. David Harris, D.O., described how readily available printouts of post-visit summaries—complete with an AI transcription—expedite paperwork responsibilities for him and his team of providers. Additionally, he said, “Medication lists and the communication between us and community providers has been just a big benefit.”
Clinical Operations Manager Melanie Olivas praised the capability of the Federal EHR to import vaccine records, “since we really want to look at our vaccines, our vaccinations, our preventative care.” And Nurse Practitioner Thomas Trubenach noted the improved integration between health programs. “Ordering studies, for example,” he explained. “We can order tests, X-rays, labs and they’re all available right away.”
Finally, Dr. Matthew White, deputy chief of staff, pointed to the bottom line.
“We’ve been able to benchmark ourselves against outside of VA, and we’ve seen our time spent with the patient increasing, and our time spent specifically in the EHR decreasing, which is a good thing.”
